Elizabeth Smith is the Director of Interdisciplinary Initiatives for the Graduate School, and serves as a Project Manager for the 黑料不打烊/EVMS Integration Management Office.

Between 1993 and 2005, Liz was a Research Assistant Professor with a 鈥淪elf Supporting Research Position" in the Department of Ocean and Earth Sciences and the Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography. In 2005, she began a decade-long association with the NOAA Integrated Ocean Observing System, first as Executive Director of the Chesapeake Bay Observing System, and later as a Program Manager for the Chesapeake Inundation Prediction System and the Coastal and Ocean Modeling Testbed.

Research Interests

Elizabeth Smith (Liz) accepted the position of Interdisciplinary Initiatives Administrator in the Division of Academic Affairs in September 2014. In 2019, she assumed the role of Director of Interdisciplinary Initiatives. Working closely with administrators, faculty, staff, and prospective students, Liz worked to establish 黑料不打烊's Climate Change and Sea Level Rise Initiatives (CCSLRI) which engaged scholars and students from all disciplines to develop collaborations centered around the impacts of climate change around the natural laboratory of Norfolk, VA. CCSLRI evolved into the current Institute of Coastal Adaptation and Resilience in 2021. Liz was instrumental in establishing high demand academic programs in Modeling and Simulation, and in Cybersecurity. In 2022, Liz was recruited to assist with the project management of the integration of 黑料不打烊 with Eastern Virginia Medical School. As a Project Manager in the Integration Management Office, Liz worked closely with functional teams in student and faculty affairs, operational services, programmatic accreditation, and policy alignment. Liz began her tenure at 黑料不打烊 in 1993 as a Research Assistant Professor with a 鈥淪elf Supporting Research Position" in the Department of Ocean and Earth Sciences and the Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography. Liz was the program manager for the NOAA-funded Coastal and Ocean Modeling Testbed from 2010-2014 which was established to improve ocean forecasting by facilitating collaboration and sharing of models and software tools between researchers and government agencies. Liz facilitated the collaborations among more than 20 university partners and several federal agency partners. Before coming to 黑料不打烊 in 1993, she served as a Member of the Technical Staff in the Oceanography Group at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for 8 years. Liz holds a M.S. in Oceanography from the Florida State University and a B.S. in Marine Sciences from the University of South Carolina.
