Chemical Inventories

All research laboratories, shops and spaces are required to maintain a chemical inventory that includes all hazardous chemicals stored in the laboratory. Chemical inventories are maintained through the听system. PIs, or their TA's/GS's/Lab Manager are responsible for reviewing and updating inventory records.

What chemicals should be included in the CampusOptics Inventory system?

Any chemical with an NFPA rating of a 2 or above must be included in the inventory. If a chemical has any GHS pictogram or the NFPA diamond on the chemical contains a 鈥2鈥 in any section, it should be added to your chemical inventory.

Excluded items: The following items are not required to be included in the CampusOptics inventory system:

  • Consumer products, including cleaning agents (excluding chlorine bleach, which should be listed on inventory)
  • Materials to be expended within 1-2 days (e.g., working solutions)
  • Radioactive materials
  • Biohazardous materials
  • Culture media, agar, and broth
  • Latex paint
  • Printer inks and toner
  • Microorganisms o Research samples
  • Oil (depends on quantity and if SDS lists a rating of 2 or more).

Maintaining the chemical inventory:

  1. Access the inventory using .
  2. Review the inventory at the beginning or end of each semester and update as needed.

Access CampusOptics

With the new system, you will have to create a user login. Search your inbox for an email from "CampusOptics" that provides a link to create the login or notify EHS and we will have the system re-send the link听(EHS cannot create logins for users).

  • Its also required that the PI of labs register to use the system. EHS knows majority of lab spaces have TA's/GA's and/or a lab manager doing the work, but we also like to have PIs use the system just to oversee and view other items within the site (Assets, SDS's).

If you have already created a login, please follow this link听听to access the new inventory system, which displays chemical inventory and Safety Data sheets.

Once logged in, click on "Chemical", under 鈥淐ontainers鈥 you should be able to view your inventory. If you have any problems logging in or viewing your inventory, please reach out to us at ehsdept@odu.edu for assistance.

Once logged in, click on "INVENTORY", under 鈥淚tems鈥 听you should be able to view your inventory. If there are no items listed, then an inventory was never completed for your assigned space/lab.

To complete an inventory:

If you would like to add your lab staff, TA's/GA's, send an email to听ehsdept@odu.edu听with the following information:
