Beyond Clinic Walls (BCW) is an innovative outreach initiative that began at the EVMS Glennan Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology. Founded by student leaders in 2010 who were passionate about reducing social isolation among older adults, in 2012 Beyond Clinic Walls received recognition from the Commonwealth Council on Aging for the annual best practices award competition. BCW connects students with nursing home residents through meaningful engagement. Beyond Clinic Walls (BCW) connects students with older adults residing at Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital.

Beyond Clinic Walls (BCW) offers two opportunities for Medical and Health Professions students:

Through TIME (Together In Meaningful Engagement), organized teams of students regularly visit older adults at Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital, fostering companionship, conversation, and social connection.

In addition to participating in TIME, students are invited and encouraged to complete Dementia Friends training and elect to become Dementia Friends Champions, equipping them to raise awareness about dementia and support individuals living with the condition in their communities.

T.I.M.E.-This program provides students with the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with residents at Lake Taylor while promoting companionship, social engagement, and an enhanced quality of life.

鈾 Students form teams of at least two members and are matched with a long-term resident at Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital.

鈾 Student teams commit to visiting their assigned resident each month at mutually convenient times, including daytime, evening, weekday, or weekend visits.

鈾 Before beginning visits, students attend an on-site orientation tour at Lake Taylor and are introduced to their assigned resident.

鈾 With prior approval and when appropriate, students may bring their well-behaved dog during visits to help enhance the resident's experience.

Dementia Friends-a global movement that changes the way people think, act and talk about dementia. During the interactive session, you will increase your understanding of dementia and think about the small things that you can do to make a difference for people living with dementia in your community.
