Hampton Roads Community Collaborative

The Hampton Roads Community Collaborative builds trust and promotes transparency by facilitating community feedback and guidance of activities at Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at 黑料不打烊, particularly those that affect traditional and emergent vulnerable or under-resourced communities.

We currently have 7 members who reflects a range of community voices from across the Hampton Roads region. Members include:

Rosalene Barnes-Savage is a resident of Portsmouth. She joined the HRCC in 2020, shortly after a recruiter from EVMS came to her neighborhood to find people interested in engaging with EVMS. She has consistently dedicated time and effort to improving her community and remains dedicated to ensuring the wellbeing of older community members as well as children.

Latisha 鈥淢issy鈥 Carter resides in Newport News. She joined the HRCC in July 2022, after participating in EVMS COVID-19 studies in 2021. She is a tireless advocate for mental health awareness, and she welcomes the opportunity to learn, explore, and discuss information as well as misinformation as it emerges in real time.

Senta Harris is a resident of Portsmouth and has been a member of HRCC since 2021. She believes that good health is the #1 priority in life; accepting health issues and learning how to manage them rather than to ignore them is critically important. As an educator in the public school system, she would like to see better use of grant money for tutoring and greater commitment from parents to access resources that can improve their children鈥檚 educations.

Shirley Larry is a resident of Virginia Beach. She became involved with community outreach work thanks to a Section 8 flyer seeking volunteers, and she has been helping her community ever since. She considers her work with the HRCC a privilege and inspires her to think, learn and affirm her value for her community.

Derek Lathan is a resident of Norfolk, VA. He passionately advocates for community engagement and positive change. With boundless enthusiasm, Derek actively contributes to HRCC's initiatives, embodying the spirit of collaboration and dedication. His commitment extends beyond HRCC as he actively engages with individuals with intellectual disabilities, driven by a profound sense of purpose and a vision for a healthier and more knowledgeable community.

 

Robin Peterkin is a resident of Norfolk. She joined the HRCC approximately one year ago after being approached by other HRCC members who were aware of her strong commitment to the wellbeing of children and youth. She credits participation in the HRCC with teaching her about the importance of good mental health and giving her the ability to share information about available resources that other community members might not be aware of.

Courtnea Edney is a resident of Hampton. She joined HRCC when an EVMS research team came to her neighborhood to recruit survey participants for a COVID-19 study. She is an advocate for open, bi-directional communication, particularly to promote the safety and wellbeing of elderly residents in her community. She works closely with the president of her neighborhood council to support community members, providing a monthly foodbank event and information about EVMS and other services.
