Stipend Rates

A total of 12 stipend checks are issued each academic year, and trainees are encouraged to participate in the direct deposit program. Stipend rates are reviewed annually in April/May. Stipend rates below are guaranteed for the 2026-2027 academic year.

Emergency Medicine Residency Educational Stipend

EVMS Emergency Medicine provides an educational stipend of $350 each year for each resident, which may be used for conference attendance, professional dues, books/journals, or medical equipment.

The residency program currently pays for a Rosh Review subscription for all residents.

Professional Organization Membership

It is important for residents to be exposed to and involved in organized Emergency Medicine. We pay for membership in the  (ACEP), the  (VACEP), the  (EMRA), and the  (SAEM) during your entire training. This also allows our residents to receive monthly issues of the  and .

Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) Annual Meeting

Each year, EVMS Emergency Medicine sends all our PGY-1s to the . The department pays costs for travel to and from the meeting, registration, lodging, and meals. Attendance at this meeting provides our EM residents with exposure to cutting-edge research and new clinical information and a chance to interact with residents and faculty from other EM departments across the country.

Ultrasound Course

The department conducts an Ultrasound Course for all incoming PGY-1 residents. Residents gain hands-on experience in the use of point of care ultrasound in the Emergency Department (ED). Topics covered include Trauma FAST exam, gallbladder, AAA, early pregnancy, cardiac and vascular access imaging. This course lays the groundwork for residents to attain a high level of confidence in using point of care ultrasound in the ED.

Virginia Beach EMS Duty Physician Program

EVMS EM has partnered with Virginia Beach EMS (VB EMS) in an effort to provide an intensive EMS experience for resident physicians that starts in their first year. The ultimate goal is to provide the resident physician with an experience that enhances their understanding of prehospital care from both a patient and a provider perspective while elevating the level of patient care provided in the prehospital setting. During PGY-1 orientation, residents will complete an Emergency Vehicle Operating Course (EVOC). During their EMS rotation, PGY-1 residents will complete the VB EMS requirements to become an EMS Duty Physician. In the PGY-2 year and beyond, residents can respond to EMS calls in an EMS response vehicle they operate.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Basic Life Support (BLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Instructor Courses

EVMS Emergency Medicine will pay the registration fee for all PGY-1 or PGY-2 residents who complete these courses.

Emergency Medicine Residency Vacation/Educational Leave

The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) requires 46 weeks of residency training each year to be eligible for ABEM board certification.

Leave

The boards of individual specialties may have specific requirements for the amount of time spent in a training program. If an extended leave of absence, for any reason, is necessary, the trainee should discuss the effect of the leave on the requirements and duration of the training program.

Three weeks (15 scheduled workdays) free of clinical or fellowship duties, per academic year.  Leave requests must receive approval in advance from the program director, and trainees should check with the program director regarding program-specific policies.  Leave requests will not be approved during the first week of July or the last week of June. The number of leave days will be prorated if the GME trainee's start date is other than July 1.

Sick leave may be authorized with full pay and benefits for a period not to exceed four weeks.  Extended leaves require documentation from the treating physician. The number of sick days will be prorated if the GME trainee's start date is other than July 1.

Provides up to twelve weeks of job-protected leave for certain medical and military situations.  Must be employed for at least one year and have worked at least 1250 hours in the 12 months before leaving starts.

Six weeks of paid leave to use once during the course of the residency program. ACGME leave runs concurrently with available paid annual and sick leave.

Leave is provided through a combination of sick leave and vacation leave.

Leave is provided through the use of vacation leave.

Graduate Medical Education trainees are responsible for the clinical care of the patients within the educational program. To this end, trainees are not afforded the standard institutional holidays. The education committee of each training program has a set policy, which guides the provision of national, state, and religious holidays.

Trainee Benefits

Dental and Vision are bundled with the health insurance plan. Standalone plans are not available.

Trainees are provided with a choice of six group health insurance plans. If the trainee chooses a more expensive policy or wishes to add a spouse or dependent children, the cost of the coverage selected will be the responsibility of the GME trainee.

GME trainees receive one time their base stipend in group term life insurance at no cost. Voluntary Supplemental Life Insurance is available for the resident, spouse, and dependents, and will be available with full premiums being paid by the Resident through payroll deduction.

EVMS provides group long-term disability insurance at no cost to the GME trainee. Once approved by the insurance carrier, the benefit is 60% of the monthly base stipend after a 180-day waiting period. Supplemental long-term disability is available at full cost to the GME trainee.

The institution provides professional liability insurance covering medical activities clearly defined within the scope of the training program at no cost to the trainee. Activities outside the program are not covered by the profession liability insurance provided to trainees of Eastern Virginia Medical School.

May enroll and make employee contributions to the 黑料不打烊 403(b) plan offered by TIAA and/or Fidelity Investments.  No employer contribution to this plan.

EVMS provides group short-term disability at no cost to the GME trainee. Once approved, the benefit provides 100% of the monthly base stipend after a 14-day elimination period, and all paid leave has been exhausted.
